Daimler’s New SLK Roadster Wins Prestigious 2011 Auto Bild Magazine Design Award
Research Frontiers (Nasdaq: REFR) licensee Daimler AG announced on Friday that it has won the prestigious 2011 Auto Bild Magazine Design Award for its new Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster, which offers as a world premier, the MAGIC SKY CONTROL all glass panoramic roof using Research Frontiers’ SPD-Smart light control technology.
Daimler’s news release about the award notes “The new Roadster from Mercedes-Benz was voted as the overall winner of the automotive beauty contest by around 90,000 readers of the popular specialist magazine. As a result, the SLK can now proudly carry the title of ‘Germany’s most beautiful car.’ The new roadster uncompromisingly takes driving pleasure and open-air enjoyment to a new level. It blends light-footed sportiness with stylish comfort, a striking sports-car design with total suitability for everyday use, top performance with exemplary ecology. What’s more, the SLK is proud to present the world premiere of the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which switches to light or dark at the touch of a button.”
In February, it was announced that Daimler AG has selected Research Frontiers’ patented SPD-Smart light-control technology for one of its latest Mercedes-Benz innovations: the MAGIC SKY CONTROL panoramic glass roof. The Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster, which debuted on January 29, 2011, is the first Daimler model to offer the MAGIC SKY CONTROL smart glass roof which allows users to instantly change the tint of the roof with the press of a button.
In the first month following its market launch, Daimler reports that sales of the new Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster have “climbed sharply” and are up 47.7% from last year.
Research Frontiers congratulates Daimler and our other licensees involved in the supply of SPD-SmartGlass for the award-winning Mercedes-Benz SLK. Hitachi Chemical manufactures the SPD-Smart light-control film used in MAGIC SKY CONTROL, and has announced its capacity to manufacture 4.3 million square feet of SPD-Smart film per year. Automotive glass companies Nippon Sheet Glass in Japan and Pilkington in the UK and Germany process and laminate Hitachi’s SPD film into the glass for the MAGIC SKY CONTROL roof. SPD Control Systems and Research Frontiers have jointly licensed intellectual property to Daimler AG regarding the electronics to control the SPD-SmartGlass in the Mercedes-Benz SLK and other vehicles.
Made with patented light-control SPD film developed by Research Frontiers, SPD-SmartGlass is the world’s fastest-switching variably tintable dynamic glazing technology. It is the only dimmable window technology that gives users the ability to instantly and precisely control the level of shading to any point between very dark and clear. This provides exceptional control over solar energy while also adding to user comfort and protecting interiors. Available in both glass and lightweight polycarbonate substrates, SPD-Smart products – windows, sunroofs, skylights, doors, partitions and more – are laminated glazings that offer a distinctive combination of energy efficiency and security, can be controlled manually or automatically, and are available in custom sizes and fabrications for original equipment, new construction, replacement and retrofit projects.
