Research Frontiers SPD-SmartGlass Featured in the Technology Pavilion at CEDIA EXPO 2011
Benefits for Home Theaters, Media Centers and Other Applications Highlighted at Premier Industry Event
September 8, 2011. Research Frontiers’ (Nasdaq: REFR) SPD-SmartGlass(TM) is a featured product in the Future Technology Pavilion of the 2011 CEDIA Expo being held from September 8-10 at the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.
SPD-SmartGlass is the world’s fastest-switching variably tintable dynamic glazing technology. It is the only dimmable window technology that gives users the ability to instantly and precisely control the level of shading to any point between very dark and clear. SPD-SmartGlass offers a distinctive combination of benefits including user comfort, improved security and energy efficiency.
The 6×3 foot SPD-Smart(TM) window was fabricated with SPD film manufactured by Research Frontiers licensee Hitachi Chemical Company, Ltd. Hitachi has announced its capacity to manufacture 4.3 million square feet of SPD-Smart film per year from its new production facility. Lamination of the film into the window was done by LTI Smart Glass, Inc., also a licensee of Research Frontiers. A division of the LTI Group, LTI Smart Glass has over 120,000 square feet of production capacity and four autoclave ovens.
CEDIA Expo attendees can operate the large SPD-Smart window using a Crestron touch pad control device.
The Future Technology Pavilion is a leading attraction of CEDIA Expo and encompasses nearly 2,500 square feet of the trade show floor. The SPD-Smart window will be close to a large “video wall” which will allow users to experience the benefits of SPD-SmartGlass for a variety of applications including home theaters, media centers, television studios and more.
On September 9 at 9AM, Gregory M. Sottile, Ph.D., Research Frontiers’ Director of Market Development, will give a presentation at CEDIA Expo entitled “Integrating Smart Glass Technology for Lifestyle Enhancement and Energy Savings.”
CEDIA is an international trade association of companies that specialize in designing and installing electronic systems for the home. These systems include home networking, home automation and communication systems, media rooms, single or multi-room entertainment systems, and integrated whole-house subsystems providing lighting control, security, and HVAC systems. CEDIA Expo is the premier tradeshow in the residential electronic systems industry. It attracts thousands of electronic systems professionals each year to view the latest products and technologies from more than 400 exhibitors. Attendance in 2010 exceeded 20,000. More information about the 2011 CEDIA Expo is available from the event website.
Made with patented light-control SPD-Smart film developed by Research Frontiers, SPD-SmartGlass is available in both glass and lightweight polycarbonate substrates. SPD-Smart products – windows, sunroofs, skylights, doors, partitions and more – are laminated glazings that offer a distinctive combination of user comfort, security and energy efficiency, can be controlled manually or automatically, and are available in custom sizes and fabrications for original equipment, new construction, replacement and retrofit projects.
In February 2011, it was announced that Daimler AG has selected SPD-SmartGlass technology for use in the panoramic glass roof of its new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster.
