SmartGlass International Supplies Retrofit SPD-SmartGlass to Five London Television Studios of the Associated Press
SmartGlass International, a licensee of Research Frontiers Inc. (Nasdaq: REFR), announced it has supplied retrofit SPD-SmartGlass(TM) to five London television studios of the Associated Press.
SmartGlass International’s retrofit panels made with SPD SmartGlass were specified for this state-of-the-art television project which includes five studios within central London. The project goal was to create a solar control glazing system that would combat the negative effects of direct sunlight, including glare and heat build-up.
This project allowed the AP to meet its design goal of requiring the glass in the studios to have the ability to instantly switch to maximize daylight when it’s needed and to provide controllable solar shading during peak light conditions. These features are both valuable and unique to SPD-SmartGlass, and are especially useful for application in television studios because they allow for optimal daylight harvesting without compromising recording quality or the temperature of the control room. The SmartGlass International installation also satisfied the Associated Press specification that the London skyline be a featured backdrop in these five television studios by permitting the instant control of heat, light and glare in these studios, without blocking panoramic views through the windows.
Retrofit SPD-SmartGlass also is an ideal solution in projects where existing windows and skylights must remain in place yet dynamic control over incoming light, glare and heat is needed. Retrofit panels such as those used for this project are not available using other smart window shading technologies such as electrochromics.
More information about this installation is available in SmartGlass International’s news release.
Made using patented light-control SPD film developed by Research Frontiers, SPD-SmartGlass is the world’s fastest-switching variably tintable dynamic glazing technology. It is the only dimmable window technology that gives users the ability to instantly and precisely control the level of shading to any point between very dark and clear. This provides exceptional control over incoming solar energy while also adding to user comfort and protecting interiors. Available in both glass and lightweight polycarbonate substrates, SPD-Smart(TM) products – windows, skylights, doors, partitions, sunroofs and more – are laminated glazings that offer a distinctive combination of sustainability and security, can be controlled manually or automatically, and are available in custom sizes and fabrications for new construction, replacement and retrofit projects.
