SPD-SmartGlass for Television Studios: A Case Study
SmartGlass International Installs SPD-SmartGlass at ITV “Daybreak” Studio In London
Research Frontiers Inc. (Nasdaq: REFR) licensee SmartGlass International has published a case study on its installation of SPD-SmartGlass(TM) at the set of “Daybreak,” the new breakfast anchor program from ITV, one of the UK’s largest commercial television networks.
The complete summary from SmartGlass International is available here.
Located in the heart of London and with floor-to-ceiling windows, the studio of Daybreak offers an exceptional panoramic view of the city skyline and beyond – making the perfect backdrop for the popular morning show. However, because the show is a live broadcast starting at dawn, the level of sunlight entering the studio intensifies as the show progresses, creating glare and heat issues for the show’s anchors and their guests.
As a result, SmartGlass International was specified to design and install a solar control glazing system that would reduce the oppressive effects of direct sunlight, including excessive glare and heat into the studio. The company’s SPD-SmartGlass panels offered the ideal solution because they can be instantly and automatically dimmed to any point between clear and dark. This precisely controls incoming glare and solar heat gain, preserves the panoramic views and protects the studio’s inhabitants from the damaging effects of UV light.
Using SPD-Smart(TM) light-control technology developed by Research Frontiers, SmartGlass International designed and installed approximately 100 panels throughout the studio. As stated in the company’s case study, “Now, when the sun is just rising over London the backdrop is in darkness, at this stage the glass is at its clearest state where it will allow for maximum light penetration. As the morning gets brighter, the glass is ‘tuned’ to control glare from the sun and heat passing through into the studio.”
Also as noted in the study, SPD-SmartGlass can save energy for heating and cooling, reduce artificial lighting costs, lower a building’s carbon emissions and eliminate the need for expensive, view-blocking window treatments.
Additional information about SmartGlass International is available on the company’s website.
Made using light-control SPD film patented by Research Frontiers, SPD-Smart products are the world’s fastest-switching variably tintable dynamic glazing technology. It is the only dimmable window technology that gives users the ability to instantly, precisely and uniformly control the level of shading to any point between very dark and clear. This provides exceptional control over incoming solar energy while also adding to user comfort and protecting interiors. Available in both glass and lightweight polycarbonate substrates, SPD-Smart products – windows, skylights, doors, partitions, sunroofs and more – are laminated glazings that offer a distinctive combination of sustainability and security, can be controlled manually or automatically, and are available in custom sizes and fabrications for new construction, replacement and retrofit projects.
