Vision Systems Energia dimmable window, using Research Frontiers SPD-Smart technology with a transparent photovoltaic panel, is one of three finalists in the “Greener Cabin, Health, Safety & Environment” category of the 2014 Crystal Cabin Award

Brignais, France and Woodbury, NY – March 7, 2014. The 2014 Crystal Cabin Award, the only international award for excellence in aircraft interior innovation, has issued a press release announcing its 2014 Finalists, and Research Frontiers’ licensee Vision Systems has been selected. From the Crystal Cabin Award press release:

“…the finalists for this year’s Crystal Cabin Awards are providing a good overview of what passengers can expect to see on board very soon. Again and again it comes down to the burning question: how can an increase in passenger comfort be combined with an increase in efficiency for flight operations? This was also a significant criterium for the 24-person International Judging Panel, including amongst its members numerous representatives of airlines and all the major aircraft manufacturers…. For the eighth time, the finalists and winners in the seven award categories are being presented at the ‘Aircraft Interiors Expo,’ a trade fair for aircraft cabins, being held in Hamburg from 8 to 10 April this year.”

Vision Systems’ SPD-Smart Energia window operates without using the aircraft’s electrical system because it integrates a transparent photovoltaic layer that is capable of producing its own energy – from the sun, or from artificial light sources. In addition to remarkable “Greener Cabin, Health, Safety & Environment” benefits, Energia facilitates the process of installing dimmable windows on new production and aftermarket aircraft – it requires no modifications to the aircraft’s existing electrical system because it is completely independent from the cabin’s wiring. In addition to easy installation, it is easy to maintain as the solution includes use of durable and scratch-resistant composite glass.

Energia offers other environmental, practical and aesthetic features that can be integrated into and contained within the system. In addition to providing electricity to the SPD-Smart dimmable window, the photovoltaic panel is capable of charging personal electronic devices, using an integrated USB plug offered by Vision Systems in Energia. For a sleek, modern cabin interior look, LED lighting can integrated within the window and operate without requiring cabin wiring or power.

On April 8, 2014 at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, as a Finalist in this year’s award, Vision Systems’ Energia window will be presented to the media and the public in the Crystal Cabin Award Gallery (Hall B1, Booth A41). Read more about the Crystal Cabin Award in the following links:
